9/21/2019

The fence installation on Tuesday, September 17th went in without a hitch.

A well-deserved "pat on the back" to all those
who turned out to help put it up and get things read. Now all we need are fish!

The Garth Homer Society

Individuals from The  Garth Homer Society came out for a tour at our hatchery last May. After an educational tour of the facility, participants got to release baby salmon into the Goldstream. This was an enjoyable and exciting experience for both the folks at The Garth Homer Society and our GVSEA volunteers.

"
The Garth Homer Society provides day services and programming within Greater Victoria for adults with developmental disabilities. We have 185 clients participating in seven different community and employment programs.

Our clients display an astounding range of capabilities, but whatever their capabilities, they all share one thing - hope for their futures, and for a place in the world where they can feel at home among people who value and include them. Our job every day is to work with members of the Garth Homer family to help them be everything that they can be, to the very best of their abilities, and in the unique and often wonderful ways that are best suited to them." - http://www.garthhomersociety.org/

It goes to show you that our facility here at Goldstream goes far beyond the production of salmon for south Vancouver Island Streams.

Another successful BBQ and gathering of our valued volunteers at Beaver Lake Park. We celebrated Bill’s 90th Birthday, welcomed new board members, handed out prizes and ate lots of yummy food!

Thank you to everyone who helped put on this day and thank you to our devoted volunteers; without you, this lunch gathering and our daily hatchery enhancement duties would not happen. Happy Summer everyone! ~ Alex Scott

"Well, we pulled it off and the fry even got to meet the Premier! It was great to chat with eager students, adults, and travelers from all over the world about the work at GVSEA.

We received some great questions and doled out lots of information about the hatchery, the school program, salmon habitat and their life cycle. Thanks to Steve, Bill, Brian and Andre for the great day."

"A little video from yesterday's great community event held at Rosewell Creek / Fanny Bay Hatchery!  Hope to see you there next year!"   - Alexandra Scott
A celebration of Salmon and their Ecosystems!

On Sunday May 5th from 10-3pm, the general public was welcomed to Rosewall Creek Hatchery.

A great family and community day with free admission and fun for all ages!
Visitors learned about salmon, their ecosystems, fish biology, local enhancement initiatives and more! Hope to see you there next year!

Fanny Bay Hatchery Goals:
  • To encourage the return of wild salmon runs
  • To enhance the creeks by repairing and creating additional habitat
  • To monitor and protect existing habitat, ensuring the miracle of salmon for future generations

To achieve these goals, four major areas need to be addressed:
  • Inclusion: Involvement and education of the public on the importance of non-degraded habitat/watercourses for salmon survival
  • Restoration: Increasing the survival rate of wild salmon and restoring their runs
  • Enhancement: Repair of creek, river and riparian habitat
  • Monitoring: Protection of fish, creeks and riparian habitat

An interesting video interview with Dr. Dick Beamish and an interviewer from SFU. This subject is an upcoming multi-national initiative that hopefully will cast some light on what happens to our salmon once they’re in the Pacific ocean.

2019 Salmon Carcass Toss at Mount Doug Park

The annual Salmon Carcass Transplant/Toss, Coho smolt transplant and
riparian planting were a super success this year!

"At the edge of Douglas Creek in Mount Doug Park on Saturday, small but mighty volunteers are heaving frozen salmon as far as they can.

These salmon aren’t going to come back to life, but it’s still a resurrection of sorts.

“It’s really part of the ecosystem to have, basically, salmon fertilizer, what it amounts to, in the creek,” said Darrell Wick, president of Friends of Mount Douglas Society.

This annual fish flinging is an attempt to replenish nutrients in the area and boost the future salmon stock."
